They have a figurehead, ineffective AD who's only onboard to raise money...results don't matter. The biggest issue however, is they refuse to accept the obvious which is to end the football program and concentrate only on basketball. Use the model established by other Division One programs who have had success in not fielding D1 football. That includes Nova, Creighton, Seton Hall and Gonzaga. Even small, non-football schools have had success such as Belmont, Bradley, Ill Chicago, Florida Gulf Coast...all with NCAA runs recently.

As a resident, I can tell you no one cares, at all, about UNLV athletics with the best we can hope for is they play a team we have some interest in.

Jerry Tarkanian long gone.

You had to know somebody BIG to be from out of town and get a ticket to those games in the late eighties, early nineties. Celebrities only in the "Gucci seats".

That Mack Center rocked.

i remember a Saturday night playing blackjack at the Frontier and every TV in the place had the Rebs on for a home game. I even remember the dealer checking the screen so often that it actually slowed down the game. Every home game was an event. If they allowed 25% in for the games this year, I still don't think they would reach that threshold. Same for football although there will be a lot of interest in people going to see the stadium. They had college football in mind for that building, but it wasn't for the Rebels...it was for other big games with Jerry Jones as a model in Dallas.

Impossible to assemble a team like the one from the nineties. From look the other way recruiting violations, to boosters like Richard "The Fixer" Perry lining the pockets of the UNLV players. Not to shave points but because he was huge fan of team.

Tark the Shark .. it was all him and the players that he recruited .. Larry Johnson etc ..

Tark tried to do it again at Fresno came close but the players didn't have the same personality weren't as likable ( for the most part )

My first time going to Vegas was during the end of that era.

I remember Imperial Palace giving out Runnin Rebels back to back title shirts at the sportsbook.. Still have a couple of them..

Worst refereed game in sports history in semis in 91.. NCAA was out to get Tark. Program hasn't been the same since.

All this is a shame to hear, they were one of the most exciting college basketball teams to watch. It didn't matter if you were a fan of them or not, their style and up tempo play was enough to draw anyone's attention to watch them.I just can't believe when you have a program like that you just disappear, and never make it back.Almost all the good teams suffer a lull at one point or another, but they rebound back at some time, but the Rebels never did.

Another low point as they rescue a guy from one of the Dakota's to coach...he manages to finish a game under .500 for two years and now heads to the bright lights of Ames to coach the Cyclones. They think they can get Rick Pittino as the next coach. It will be either a guy no one has heard of or someone who hasn't coached in years who is just a bit younger than Dick Vitale. Please cancel football and pay a coach.
